SeegerSongs:
John McCutcheon Folk music's renaissance man - master instrumentalist, powerful singer-songwriter, storyteller, activist, teacher and author. His eclectic catalog of ballads, historical songs, children's songs, love songs, topical satire, fiddle and hammer dulcimer tunes and even symphonic works are among the broadest in American folk music. His 36 albums have earned 6 Grammy nominations, and his 2019 release To Everyone in All the World collected songs of Pete Seeger that influenced him. He annually leads the Highland Center's songwriting camp in the Smoky Mountains.
Guy Davis plays guitar, harmonica and blues guitar - performing both traditional songs and originals that you would swear were traditional. His love of blues came from his Southern grandmother, and he’s taken it around the world from the Equator to the Arctic Circle. Every concert and album shines with his reverence for the blues masters who came before him, from Lightnin' Hopkins to Babatunde Olatunji. He's also an Emmy Award-winning actor, he’s called "An Ambassador of the Blues." Guy knew and loved Pete & Toshi Seeger well as family friends, performing for a time with Pete and his grandson Tao Rodriguez Seeger, who appeared often on The Eighth Step stage. Guy teaches an array of workshops on music and acting.
Tret Fure is a prolific and very original contemporary singer-songwriter-guitarist, and a legend in the evolution of Women's Music, both for her music and her music production. Her lyrical songs capture simple moments, deeply personal emotions, snapshots of social inequities and glimpses of home. Her guitar work is second to none; and like all of us, she was inspired along the way by Pete Seeger. Tret has released 16 albums and CDs over the course of her 48-year career. She teaches guitar and songwriting individually, and often at songwriting camps like this one, and other workshop settings.
Dan Berggren creates folksongs that capture rare small moments bursting with wider meaning, or captures the essential nobility of certain small-town characters, or simply taste authentically of home. The award-winning musician, radio production expert and educator is professor emeritus at the State University of New York, where he was awarded the President's Medal for Excellence in Teaching. Dan has long been intimately associated with Sagamore, where he and cohorts provide great music and lead the enormously successful Mountain Music Weekends.
Sara Milonovich has taken awards since her teen years (time of her first Eighth Step appearance) as an alt country singer, fiddler, songwriter/composer, and bandleader. An Adirondacker now living in Pete Seeger's hometown of Beacon, NY, she performs widely with her band Daisycutter. Recognized for her fiddling and songwriting, she teaches in workshops/masterclasses at festivals, and in private fiddle lessons. Sara frequently plays at Sagamore, and is heard on Pete's Grammy winning album, Pete at 89.
Great Camp Sagamore was built in 1897 by visionary great camps designer William West Durant on 1,526 acres of remote wilderness in the Adirondack Park. Later sold to railroad magnate Alfred Vanderbilt, it is now a National Historic Landmark managed by a dedicated non-profit educational institution as a public trust.
